Work-related car expenses calculator

Our calculator will take between 5 and 10 minutes to use.

What you can do with this calculator

This calculator helps you to calculate the deduction you can claim for work-related car expenses for eligible vehicles. It can be used for the 2013–14 to 2022–23 income years. Eligible vehicles include cars, station wagons and sport utility vehicles.

The results of this calculator are based on the information you provide. You should use these results as an estimate and for guidance purposes only.

You can claim work-related expenses you incurred as an employee for a car you:

  • owned (even if it is not registered in your name), or
  • leased (even if it is not registered in your name) or hired under a hire-purchase agreement.

You need to work out if you are able to claim a deduction for work-related car expenses before using the calculator. To work out your eligibility and entitlement, see Expenses for a car you own or lease.

The cents per kilometre method uses a set rate for each work-related kilometre travelled up to a maximum of 5,000 kilometres per car, per year. For the 2022–23 income year the rate per kilometre has increased from 72c to 78c.

Limitations

You can't use this calculator to calculate any expenses relating to:

  • motorcycles
  • vehicles with a carrying capacity of one tonne or more, or 9 or more passengers, such as utility trucks and panel vans.

For information regarding deductions for these vehicles, see Expenses for a vehicle that isn't yours or isn't a car.
