Differences from paper or ELS client lists

The income tax lodgment status report has the ability to list all taxpayers for whom your tax agent number is recorded on our systems and to group them according to lodged, not lodged, or not necessary. The default is to show all clients; however, you can use the filtering options and select only lodged, not lodged or not necessary. On the other hand, client lists obtained through ELS or paper are intended to identify only those clients who are expected to lodge either this year or next year.

The Tax Office recognises that many agents have been surprised to find a number of clients listed in the portal lodgment status report that didn’t appear in their ELS or paper client lists. You may notice a difference between the portal lodgment status report and an ELS income tax client list where you (or a previous tax agent) have notified us that specific clients are unlikely to need to lodge future returns (further return not necessary). When the notification is processed, the client will no longer appear on your ELS or paper generated client lists but it does not automatically remove your tax agent number from the client’s record.

To remove the client permanently, and stop them appearing on your portal lodgment status report, you need to either:

  • lodge an ELS CU (Client Update) deletion transaction, or
  • remove the client through the Tax Agent Portal (Your clients, Authorisation summary, Remove client).
