Work-related car expenses calculator

Our calculator takes between 5 and 10 minutes to use.

What you can do with this calculator

This calculator helps you to calculate the deduction you can claim for work-related car expenses for eligible vehicles.

Use this calculator for the 2013–14 to 2024–25 income years. Eligible vehicles include cars, station wagons and sport utility vehicles.

The results of this calculator are based on the information you provide. You should use these results as an estimate and for guidance purposes only.

You can claim work-related expenses you incurred as an employee for a car you:

  • own
  • lease or hire under a hire-purchase agreement. You don't need to be the registered owner, however you must be able to show there is a private arrangement that made you the owner or lessee of the car.

You need to work out if you can claim a deduction for work-related car expenses before using the calculator. To work out your eligibility and entitlement, see Expenses for a car you own or lease.

The cents per kilometre method uses a set rate for each work-related kilometre travelled up to a maximum of 5,000 kilometres per car, per year.

What you will need

To work out your work-related car expenses deduction, you will need:

  • your vehicle type
  • the amount of any award transport payment (if applicable)
  • total kilometres you travel in the income year
  • total work-related kilometres you travel in the income year.

You will also need records that show how you use the car for work purposes, expenses you incur and how you work out the decline in value (depreciation).

You will need to keep records for each vehicle claimed where more than one is used during the year.

Limitations

You can't use this calculator to calculate any expenses relating to:

  • motorcycles
  • vehicles with a carrying capacity of one tonne or more, or, 9 or more passengers – such as utility trucks and minibuses.

For information regarding deductions for these vehicles, see Expenses for a vehicle that isn't yours or isn't a car.
