Opening Doors Program

Jobs for people with diverse backgrounds across 4 streams: neurodiverse, veterans, professional and humanitarian.

Last updated 23 May 2024

About the Program

Opening Doors is a 12-month non-ongoing program that provides candidates experience in a large professional office environment.

The program aims to build a more diverse ATO workforce by accessing new talent pools and recruiting people from diverse backgrounds. The program allows participants to develop their workplace technical and corporate skills in a supportive team environment.

Participants can apply their new experiences in future recruitment processes.

All programs require participants to be an Australian citizen and undergo a security vetting process.

There are 4 streams in the program, each with a unique focus.

Neurodiverse

This provides opportunities for people who identify as neurodiverse. For the program, neurodiverse includes, but is not limited to autism, dyslexia, ADHD and dyspraxia. Applications for the Neurodiverse program are currently closed.

Veterans

The program supports the Prime Minister's Veterans' Employment Program. It provides current or previous armed service personnel (in the past 5 years) or their partners, the opportunity for 12 months of work experience in the ATO. This program allows them to develop their existing skills, build new capabilities and assist in their transition to civilian roles.

The Veterans program is due to start in September. You can register your interest in this program by emailing ELP-OpeningDoors@ato.gov.au.

Professional

There will be part-time opportunities for established professionals looking for flexible working hours and conditions, including those with primary caregiving responsibilities. Applications for the professional program are currently closed.

Humanitarian

This program provides opportunities for Australian citizens from refugee backgrounds who are seeking to establish themselves locally. Applications for the humanitarian program are currently closed.
