We are authorised by the Taxation Administration Act 1953 to request tax file numbers (TFNs). We will use the TFN and other information provided on the Day 1 notification form to identify the person who is deceased or under guardianship and the executor or administrator in our records.
It is not an offence not to provide a TFN. However, if you don't provide a TFN, there may be a delay in processing this form.
Where authorised by law, we may give this information to other government departments and agencies, including:
- Centrelink
- Australian Bureau of Statistics
- Department of Education, Skills and Employment
- Department of Social Services
- law enforcement agencies.
We also provide taxpayer information to treaty partners overseas under international tax agreements.
