About TPSG membership
An important feature of the TPSG is the diverse range of members' skills and experience. This helps the ATO to understand the issues and impacts of policy and administration changes impacting tax practitioners and their clients. We are keen to have representatives from a diverse background as they provide valuable feedback from the tax practitioner and taxpayer perspective.
Membership is at the discretion of the ATO co-chair who will consider a range of factors. These include the relevance of the tax practitioner’s knowledge and expertise, and their potential to contribute to outcomes.
Tax practitioner members participate in the group in their personal capacity, not as representatives of their firm or practice. Professional association members represent the relevant professional body or industry group.
TPSG membership expectations
Practitioner members must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board, have a minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience in the profession, and be located in Australia.
Members will actively contribute to the work of the group and abide by the ATO consultation framework. Expectations of TPSG members include:
- providing input on issues and processes affecting the tax profession as a whole in relation to the administration of the tax and superannuation systems
- identifying emerging issues or developments that may be of concern to the tax profession broadly in relation to meeting tax and superannuation obligations
- identifying opportunities to improve the administration of the tax and superannuation systems
- demonstrating integrity and engaging in good faith and in a professional and transparent manner, demonstrating a mutual respect for the expertise, contributions and role of other members
- signing and adhering to an integrity declaration which includes an agreement to meet their tax and superannuation obligations and demonstrate integrity
- adhering to information sharing guidelines applied to meeting topics and maintaining confidentiality of information, including signing a confidentiality deed where required
- disclosing any matters that could be perceived to be, or are, conflicts of interest and taking appropriate action to manage conflicts of interest.
Members’ names are published on ato.gov.au at Tax Practitioner Stewardship Group.
TPSG membership commitment
TPSG members are appointed for 2 years. The time commitment required is one day for attendance at face-to-face or virtual TPSG meetings up to 4 times per year, plus pre-reading. Meetings are usually held in the first week of March, June, September and December.
Face-to-face meetings are typically held in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra; however, this may vary. Short, ad-hoc meetings may be conducted outside formal meeting times where appropriate, but attendance is not compulsory and is subject to your availability.
Membership is expected to commence from April 2025. New members will be introduced to TPSG processes and activities before their first meeting.
Members can apply for a 2-year extension after their initial term, with approval from the ATO co-chair. Members who have served 2 consecutive terms must wait 2 years before reapplying.
Payment
Members will not be paid or reimbursed by the ATO for the cost of their time spent attending meetings or attending to related issues.
Where the cost of attending meetings would be prohibitive for individual tax practitioners, the ATO may meet reasonable costs for travel and incidental expenses, consistent with ATO guidelines and as agreed with the ATO co-chair.
