What happens after lodging your NFP self-review return

After you've submitted your return, you'll receive a self-assessed outcome of income tax exempt or taxable.

Published 6 December 2024

After you've submitted your NFP self-review return, what you do next depends on whether your NFP's self-assessed outcome was income tax exempt or taxable.

Income tax exempt outcome

If you've self-assessed as income tax exempt, then you've completed your lodgment requirements for this income year. You'll need to lodge an NFP self-review return again next income year.

To make future interactions with us simple and easy, make sure you regularly review your NFP's governing documents and keep your organisation's details up to date.

If you aren't sure if your NFP is charitable, see our previous article, Reporting when you're unsure if you have charitable purposes.

Taxable outcome

If you receive a taxable outcome after submitting your NFP self-review return, your NFP doesn't qualify for income tax exemption. Your NFP will not be required to lodge an NFP self-review return the following income year.

Your NFP will need to lodge a 2023–24 income tax return, or notify us of a non-lodgment advice if you are under the $416 threshold and eligible to do so. To notify us of a non-lodgment advice you can complete the new downloadable non-lodgment advice form. We've developed this form based on recent feedback from NFPs seeking a streamlined process that clearly sets out the information we need to process the request.

You have until 15 May 2025 to lodge your income tax return or non-lodgment advice, if your NFP has a standard income year ending 30 June. If you have an ATO-approved substituted accounting period, check your due date to lodge the 2023–24 income tax return as it is determined by your approved balance date.

We have transitional support available for NFPs who determine they are taxable, including the 15 May 2025 concessional due date to lodge your 2023–24 income tax return, remission of any applicable general interest charge, and payment plans to allow any income tax liability to be paid progressively. Find out more about what to do if your NFP is taxable.
