Privacy notice for not-for-profit (NFP) organisations self-review return.

Published 12 February 2024

We are authorised by the Taxation Administration Act 1953 to request tax file numbers (TFNs), including the TFNs of trust beneficiaries. We use TFNs to identify the correct records. You are not required by law to provide a TFN. If you don't provide one, there may be delays processing this form.

We are authorised to ask for the information on this form by the following legislation:

  • Income Tax Assessment Act 1936
  • Income Tax Assessment Act 1997
  • Taxation Administration Act 1953.

We need this information to help us administer the taxation laws. If your form is incomplete, incorrect or needs checking, it may delay processing. We may also ask you to complete a new form.

Personal information you provide on this form may be used to check that you have the authority to complete the form. We may contact you if we need more information because you signed the NFP self-review return (for example, in your capacity as an office holder).

Where authorised by law, we may give the information collected to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and to other government departments and agencies, including:

  • Department of Education
  • Department of Employment
  • Department of Social Services
  • Services Australia
  • State and Federal Police
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics
  • Director of Public Prosecutions
  • Reserve Bank of Australia.

We provide some taxpayer information to treaty partners overseas under international tax agreements. A list of these overseas countries can be found at ATO privacy policy.

Our privacy policy contains important information about your privacy. This includes:

  • information about how you can access and seek correction to information we hold about you
  • how to make a complaint if you think we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles, including how we will deal with any privacy complaints.

If you have a privacy concern or need more information, contact us.

If you suspect your privacy has been compromised, you can report it – see Data breach guidance for individuals.
