SECTION 7 Determination of population of a State  
(1)
The estimated population of a State on 31 December in a GST year is the population of the State on that date as determined by the Australian Statistician after that date and before 6 June in the GST year.

S 7(1) amended by No 21 of 2004, s 3 and Sch 1 item 8, by substituting " 6 June " for " 10 June " , effective 23 March 2004. For application provisions see note under s 5(5).

In making a determination under this section, the Australian Statistician must:

(a) if practicable, consult with the official Statistician of each State concerned; and

(b) have regard to the latest statistics in relation to population available to the Australian Statistician on the day on which the determination is made.
