How to prepare, view, lodge and amend the Not-for-profit self-review return.

Prepare and lodge NFP self-review return

NFP self-review returns can be lodged by tax agents with Income Tax account level authorisation only and permissions can be set in Access Manager.

To prepare the NFP self-review return:

  • Select a client.
  • From For action select Prepare.

OR

  • Select Lodgments then NFP self-review return.
  • Under the Not Lodged heading select Prepare next to the relevant financial year.

NFP self-review returns will be displayed in descending order based on the financial year and should be lodged from oldest periods first.

When there is more than one financial year displayed the Prepare functionality will only be available on the oldest return.

Step 1 – Organisation details

Complete all mandatory details then select:

  • Cancel, if you don't want to complete the form.
  • Next, if all fields have been successfully completed and you'll be navigated to the next step.

Step 2 – Income tax self-assessment

If the client has lodged their previous financial years NFP self-review return, the answers to questions from that form will be pre-populated on the screen. You can edit the pre-populated answers.

Note: Changing the type of organisation at any time will reset any pre-populated information. This is due to different subsequent questions being generated based on organisation type.

Complete all mandatory details then select:

  • Back, to be navigated back to Step 1.
  • Cancel, if you don't want to complete the form.
  • Next, if all fields have been completed and you'll be navigated to the next step.

Step 3 – Summary screen

This screen will display a summary of whether the client is income tax exempt or taxable. It also shows the organisation details and income tax self-assessment details based on the information provided.

If the details are correct tick the Acknowledgement of income tax exempt status and Declaration. Then select:

  • Submit, to lodge the form.
  • Back, to be navigated back to Step 2 to make changes if required.
  • Cancel, if you don't want to complete the form.

You can select print friendly version to review a print-friendly version of the summary screen before submitting the form. This preview will show the 'lodgment due date' and an informational message – 'This NFP self-review return has not been submitted.'

After you submit the form a Confirmation screen will display with a unique receipt ID for the financial year lodged. You can also open a print friendly version to print or save as a PDF and that will include the ATO receipt ID, return details, date submitted and the lodgment type (original or amendment).

View History of lodged NFP self-review return

To view history of previously lodged NFP self-review returns:

  • Select a client.
  • Select Lodgments then NFP self-review return.
  • Select History tab.

Previously submitted forms will be visible and can be accessed by selecting the Receipt ID link.

Returns will display:

  • Lodgments – ranging from newest to oldest based on financial year and a second order based on the type of lodgment (i.e. amendment or original)
  • Date lodged
  • Receipt ID – a link will open to read only view of the submitted NDP self-review return
  • Outcome – taxable, tax exempt or processing
  • Amend – a link will open to a new NFP self-review return to be completed and lodged.

Amend NFP self-review return

Follow these steps:

  • Select a client.
  • Select Lodgments then NFP self-review return.
  • Select History.
  • Select the Receipt ID link of relevant Financial year to open the form and scroll to the bottom right-hand corner and click on amend.

OR

  • Select amend for the relevant financial year and you will be navigated to a new blank return to complete.
  • Repeat the form following the same process as Prepare and Lodge NFP self-review return.
